• Why did my cable go out during that bad storm?
Rain fade can happen during heavy rains and usually lasts only a short time. Even if there is no rain in the immediate area, a coming or passing storm can be an issue. However, we don't anticipate this to occur more than a few times a year. Only .02% of an orbiting satellite's signal broadcast area is lost during storms.
• Why are some channels not as clear as others? What causes these minor reception issues?
Local Atlanta television and radio stations may cause interference on some campus channels. Channels 96 and 97 are the most likely to be effected by this type of limited interference. Noteworthy, channels 68 and 95 are not utilized on campus due to this issue.
• Why does the audio on channel 7, WTBS, sometimes sound distorted?
The audio signal WTBS transmits is too high. Generally, it is known in the cable television industry that WTBS sends a very "hot" audio signal. OIT compensates by lower the WTBS audio signal once it reaches campus. However, on some systems, especially computer television tuner cards, the problem is still audible. If audible on your system, the issue can create distortion, usually a low end buzz during peak audio. Turning off subwoofers, or other efforts to equalize the audio, can help reduce the distortion.
• Why do the edges of shapes on my television look blurred or pixalated at times?
GTCN uses direct satellite broadcast technology to receive its stations. The video signal is digitally compressed during transmission. This compression may leave small amounts of artifacts or imperfection in the image.
.• What other things can cause problems with the signal?
Solar fade occurs when the satellite is aligned with the sun and is disturbed by solar noise. This is a rare problem and may never be an issue.
• Why do some channel numbers get skipped in the line-up?
These skipped channels are there so that the line-up can be expanded in the future without changing the current line-up.
• Why is Turner South with the sports channels?
Turner South gets listed with the sport channels, because one of it's big draws is Braves baseball.
• Can I order other premium channels?
No, not right now. However, this could become an option in the coming years.
• Why are there DISH network commercials offering pay-per-view? Can I order pay-per-view?
These commercials are inserted nationally by DISH Network. Individual and campus-wide pay-per-view is not available but could be an option in years to come.
• Why are some channels not available in academic buildings?
This is due to contractual obligations with the individual channels.
• Can I use the Georgia Tech Cable Network to advertise the activities of my organization?
gtcn16 provides popular music along side campus information. We play new music and student/campus organizations can submit ads to get information out to students.
